Southside Sanctuaries - Liquorama

Living in the southside of the city and being a craft beer lover, unfortunately, I’m limited to the places I can get a good quality brew. Fortunately, there are a number of those hidden neighborhood bottle shops that are full of treasures. People are often asking me where they can go get craft beer so I decided to visit these places one by one and show my fellow southsiders a little bit about them.

"Gem of Brighton Park"

First stop, Liquorama. They are the “Tequila Oasis” but I like to call them “the store that always has the limited release beer everyone in the city is looking for but never thinks of checking here” store.  

Think Outside the Bottle

In a conversation I had with a couple of friends over some beers, we talked about how sometimes we find a beer and for a while we make it a "go to beer." We all agreed with this. Which made me think about how sometimes we find something we like and we tend to go back to it. 

I found myself sometimes walking into a bottle shop and being overwhelmed with the endless amount of craft beer they have so I choose to play it safe. There is a huge variety of beer out there on the market now. As I walk through aisle after aisle full of craft beer in different shapes, colors, and sizes trying to find what to buy, I end up picking up a six of something I had already tried multiple times. It's great beer but it's the same old taste on your palate. I forget about what this whole thing was about. Exploring. It's a great to buy a beer you have no knowledge of and you end up really enjoying it. That first experience is kind of magical. 

The King of Craft Beer

I was working at a mom and pop pizza place in the southwest side of the city in the summer of ‘09. Like most pizza joints this one closed really late and I was usually stuck there all weekend long working more than living. On a Saturday night in June, the boss came over to me and said, “Go home man, you work too hard.” Didn’t have to tell me twice. I was out there so fast I almost forgot to take off my apron. Got my bag and jumped on my bike and rode off.
